Like many different types of roofing materials, asphalt shingles are prone to a number of different problems that might require some hail damage repair, or any general repair, for that matter. Luckily, because these shingles are extremely popular, the solutions to some of the most common problems are also quite easy to come by. In some cases, it may even be necessary to do some temporary DIY repair while you wait for your appointment with your local roofer.
Let our professionals at Coxco GC Inc. show you a few asphalt shingle roofing first aid procedures to keep your roof functioning before the contractors get to your home.
Prepare a “first aid kit” for your roof so you can stay ready in case of emergencies. The first thing you’ll need is one of the staples of roof replacement specialists, a caulking gun and a bituminous roof sealant in a caulk tube. You can find both these items in your local hardware store. Remember, however, that these are not meant to be a permanent solution for serious roofing problems.
Cracked, Curled, Bent Shingles
Over time, asphalt shingles can lose their granules which keep the roof weather and waterproof. When this happens, the shingle dries out and can show signs of physical damage such as curling, cracking or bending, exposing the vulnerable underlayment underneath and causing a leak in the roof. One temporary fix for this is to apply bituminous roof sealant with a caulking gun to “glue” down the affected shingle until the professionals arrive.
High-force winds can sometimes lift up individual shingle tabs and knock them out of their nailing strip. If this is the case, it’s best to call the roofing contractors right away. There’s not much to do about the problem as it is serious enough to require a full replacement. Luckily, this is only common for roofs who are at the end or close to the end of their life spans in the first place.
