Many roofing problems are attributed to wind damage, but this isn’t always the case. Roof damage can occur due to various reasons, and several factors have to be considered in order to confirm the main issue. It also usually helps to have some knowledge about misconceptions regarding certain types of roof damage. Wind-damaged roof shingles, for instance, are often surrounded by myths that could influence how you resolve this particular problem.
In this post, roof replacement expert Coxco Roofing shares the facts behind these common misconceptions about wind damage.
Inadequate Adhesion Is Caused by Wind Damage
A lot of other things can cause the adhesion in your roof shingles to deteriorate. For example, shoddy installation can cause the shingle tabs to adhere poorly. Sometimes inadequate adhesion happens due to the failure of the sealant strip or normal wear. Make sure to look into the other possible causes to be 100% sure that you’re dealing with wind damage.
Signs of Wind Damage Are Not Obvious
Signs of wind damage are noticeable, especially during a roof inspection. Some of the symptoms of wind damage include folds, creases, missing shingles, tears and reduced adhesion. According to roofing contractors, creases and folds typically result from the wind pressure between the front and back sides of a shingle. This often exposes a large area and later on creates the folds that you see.
A Shingle’s Strength Reduction After a Storm Can Be Easily Tested
To determine a shingle’s strength reduction after a storm, experts use the Standard Test Method for Wind Resistance of Asphalt Shingles (Uplift Force/Uplift Resistance Method), or the ASTM D7158 for short. However, laboratories that can perform this test are very limited, and they usually charge an expensive fee for it. That said, this type of test is not easily accessible for some manufacturers, so they tend to use other testing methods, which could deliver results that could be significantly different from the results of an ASTM D7158.
